Adriano Henney

In this episode of Biblioscapes in Discussion, I am joined by Adriano Henney to talk about his work and his book Beyond the Mask.

The title of this book alludes to the symbolic and cultural significance of masks in Venetian tradition, originally used to conceal identity during Carnevale festivities. It draws a metaphorical parallel between masks and the city of Venice itself, suggesting that the city's true identity is hidden and largely unseen. This collection of black and white photographs seeks to reveal this hidden Venice, focusing on its everyday beauty, emotional depth, and quiet fragility, offering a more intimate, authentic portrayal of the city beyond its tourist image.

We also discussed a selection of Adrino’’s favourite photobooks from his own bookshelf…

  • Venezia by Michael Kenna

  • Il Fiume Po by Michael Kenna

  • Abruzzo by Michael Kenna

  • Zebrato by Michael Levin

  • Silver by Jonathan Chritchley

  • The Landscape by Don McCullin
