Ulana Switucha

In this episode of Biblioscapes in Discussion, I am joined by Ulana Switucha to talk about her work and her book Torii.

For many years I have been photographing across Japan, drawn time after time to the quiet power of the spiritual landscape and, in particular, the Torii gates. This book contains my favourite images: each is a moment to pause and enjoy calm and presence. More than a collection of photos, this book invites reflection, stillness, and beauty — something to hold in your hands and leisurely experience, page by page. I hope you feel the same sense of quiet fascination that I felt while making it.

We also discussed a selection of Ulana’’s favourite photobooks from her own bookshelf…

  • Japan by Micheal Kenna (2007)

  • The Sound of Snow by Bruce Percy

  • Edo by Peter M. Cook

  • Zaido  by Yukari Chikura

  • X Elements by Kino Seido

You can see more of Ulana’s work on her website and find her on Instagram.
