Rolfe Horn

In this episode of Biblioscapes In Discussion I am joined by Rolfe Horn to discuss his work and his books, Shin Jo Sui and Landscapes.

Hanging in my darkroom is a Japanese scroll of which the following three characters are scripted in elegant calligraphy: Shin Jo Sui.

This book is a collection of photographs that are the culminaion of three visits to Japan in 2001, 2004 and 2008.

Whether the landscape was simple or complex, I began to notice how the patterns of a waterfall, the placement of rocks in a creek, the shape of a river, the swirls or streaks of clouds, or the diffusion of leaves interacted with the greater surroundings.

We also discussed a selection of Rolfe’s favourite books from his own bookshelf…

  • 20 Year Retrospective… Michael Kenna

  • Nakazora… Masao Yamamoto

  • 40 Years of Photography… Jeanloup Sieff
